Port Hastings, NS: — The Strait Regional School Board approved an $80,986,041 budget for 2015-2016 during a Special Board Meeting held this evening, Wednesday, June 17, 2015.
The Strait Regional School Board’s provincial funding allocation was reduced by 2.2% for 2015-2016. This reduction results in a $1,620,600 decrease from the 2014-2015 funding allocation. In addition, the Board must also cover inflationary cost pressures of $703,177. The net effect for the Strait Regional School Board is a budget reduction of $2,323,777.
In order to manage this budget reduction, the following adjustments have been made:
School-Based Teaching Positions
17.3 full-time equivalent (FTE) school-based teaching positions were reduced. Nine (9) of these positions reflect the decline in enrolment and 8.3 result from the application of school-based staffing formulas.
These reductions were addressed through attrition and no permanent or probationary contract teaching positions were affected.
School-Based Support Staff Positions
Five (5) Teacher Assistant positions were reduced.
Regional Office Positions
There have been a reduction of two (2) Manager positions, one secretarial position and two Regional Programs and Student Services support positions.
The Bus Garage in Sherbrooke will now only be used as a refueling station.
There have also been savings achieved through retirements and leaves as well as efficiencies gained through previous Board investments at both the school and Board level.
The Strait Regional School Board’s projected preliminary enrolment for the 2015 –2016 school year is 6,199, a decline of 255 students from the 2014-2015 enrolment of 6,454.
“The School Board continues to work hard to minimize the impact of these adjustments,” said Board Chair Francine Boudreau. “As a Board, our efforts will continue to be focused on providing students in the Strait Region with the best possible learning opportunities and on advocating for further investment in our public education system,” said Chair Boudreau.
As part of the School Board’s annual budgeting process, all areas of spending are reviewed to ensure that the best financial decisions are made and to ensure that we are strategic with the resources we have to provide the required programs and services to students.
